GrantTree

(R&D Consultancy)

Ensuring your claims are robust and fully compliant.

As a leading R&D tax and grants specialist helping startups, tech companies, and other UK innovators, GrantTree navigates the tricky environment of the UK government's funding arrangements and claims processes.

During 2023-25, I worked for the company as a consultant technical writer, drafting and editing tax claims for 35 companies, totalling approximately £1.5m. This work included:

  • Partnering with internal technical consultants to identify baseline knowledge, technological uncertainties and challenges, and qualifying activities to remain compliant and meet tax relief eligibility.

  • Translating high-level, often fragmented, information about scientific and technological advances into accessible terms while meeting the strict criteria and definition of R&D set out by HMRC.

  • Building submissions for diverse industries, spanning food, mining, housing, supply chain, as well as AutoGen UX research. Many projects included significant advances in data analytics and AI, including diffusion models.

  • Assisting in the development of the company’s own AI platform to auto-generate technical narratives. I tested the tool and provided recommendations, including creating prompts, to achieve a 50% reduction in time-to-completion.

  • Supporting the Enquiries process at various stages for returned claims by creating robust defences, many of which resulted in successful claims, thereby protecting client income and reputation.
